This stereo receiver replaced an older Sony unit, while it takes a while longer to setup the unit performs beyond my expectation.

Every now and then the picture and sound just go off, for about a second. Its been going on ever since I got this product.
I have called customer service several times. I would give some of their customer service agents a 0 star and some 2 star and one a 3 star. Issue has not really been resolved. Perhaps I need to work harder to get this fixed or perhaps I should buy another receiver.
Also denon offers another model (without the Dj or whatever feature) for less. I should have gotten that model. I feel Denon should make it clearer what the difference is between these models so consumers don’t assume that this model is better just beacause of the price.

I ordered this receiver in the first week of January. It did not work and after talking to tech support, they advise that it be returned. The supplier, Electronics Expo, received the receiver back on 1/29/10. I have left one voice mail and sent two emails asking them when they would resend a good machine. I have had no reply. Mirage Nanosat Small High-Performance Speaker (Single) CustomerReview
I bought these speakers to replace some Mirage clones I used as surround speakers in my home theater system. I have no room for large speakers in the back of my theater. I was surprised that these speakers were actually smaller than the speakers they replaced. The speakers they replaced share the Omnipolar technology. Both speakers lack any hint of bass response. My AV Receiver auto configuration kept setting the subwoofer crossover frequency at its highest setting in an attempt to compensate for the lack of bass. My large subwoofer does not respond that high, so I had to manually move the crossover frequency down. What I gained by acquiring these speakers is smoother sound more like my large front speakers. My large front speakers make the lack of bass in the rear less noticable. My old surround speakers response peak in the lower midrange, which made them sound honky and fake at times. With smoother sound and Omnipolar technology, these Mirage speakers simply disappear. You only hear the sound, and it doesn’t sound like speakers. Sometimes the sound is pulled outside of the front speakers and wraps smoothly around you rather than sounding like separate speaker systems projecting at you from distinct directions. Multi-channel SACD or DVD-audio music recordings can sound like real musicians in a real room. Human voices in the back channels sound like human voices. These speakers are exactly what my theater needed. I couldn’t be more elated.
Good – not great – small surround speaker – M. Thuot – Sandia Park, NM
The Mirage NanoSat, NS, is a not-quite-so-small satellite speaker. This model is slightly larger than the Orb speaker (4.2″ X 5.8″ H) but is constructed much like the Mirage MX. It has a 2.75″ titanium/polypropylene mid-woofer and a 0.75″ titanium hybrid tweeter mounted in an acoustic lens assembly. The NanoSat specifications claim the frequency response is from 110 Hz to 20 kHz with a crossover at 2.7 kHz. Measurements indicate that the 110 Hz specification is optimistic since the woofer has a resonance at 152 Hz (broken in) and a response at 137 Hz that is 10 db down while at 111 Hz is minus 20 db – too low an output to be very useful. I would estimate that the correct crossover frequency to a sub would be about 145 Hz. It has an 87 db efficiency specification but sounds like it plays louder than the MX (which also has a 87 db spec.) at the same power input. The NanoSat’s power rating is 100 watts maximum (8 ohms). It also has what Mirage calls an Omni-polar design; where the woofer and the tweeter each fire almost straight up onto an acoustic lens that disperses the sound through ~360 degrees. Mirage claims the only 30% of the sound will be direct, with 70% of the sound energy reflecting from the walls, etc. While this gives the speaker a larger acoustic size, is reduces imaging ability making this speaker best suited for surround applications. It should be mounted “upside-down” if it is mounted above 6 feet off the floor to direct the tweeter output down toward the listener. It also should be mounted close (~one woofer diameter) to a wall to improve the low frequency response.
Listening impressions: The Mirage NanoSat, mounted at 2.5″ from a wall, has a sound that is well balanced and quite articulate with a good mid-range and mid-highs but not quite as smooth as the MX – the lower mid-bass is a bit stronger than the MX. Like the MX, the sound has little impact (It has a small radiating area of only ~ 6 sqin (almost twice as much as the MX) compared to the ~16 sqin area of common mid-woofers). It has an audible resonance at 152 Hz and a few upper mid-range resonances that make the response somewhat uneven and lead to a hollow sound especially noticeable in reproduction of piano music. Tympani sound good and the flute is nicely rendered. Strings are good and brass has some nice ring but is missing a solid bottom. The tweeter does not have quite the bite of the MX but seems quite smooth – the treble may even be a bit recessed.The Mirage NanoSat (NS) sounded a bit congested compared with the MX, but at ~0 each it is the lowest priced speaker in this comparison test. Willie Nelson’s voice sounded better on it than on the MX. Piano music was disappointing – sounds hollow – likely cause is the strong 150 Hz resonance.
The Mirage MX (~0) sounded noticeably clearer than the Mirage NS but the sound was a slight bit lightweight compared with the others – one must drive it hard to get any bite in the strings. The MX sounds much better than the NS on piano music.Conclusions: The Mirage MX sounds slightly better in balance and clarity than the NS overall, but the NS is somewhat better in reproduction of male voices. The Mirage NS and MX are pretty close in sound quality, but I would give the edge to the MX and say it is well worth the extra per speaker in cost.

I just installed my second surround sound system in my house. I previously had put 5.1 in my bedroom and just this weekend put 7.1 in the family room. Both are powered by the Harman Kardon AVR-254 (which is awesome) Harman Kardon AVR-254 7x50W 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with HDMI 1.3a Repeater. I bought this HKTS-15 speaker package because I wanted to have a matched system and thought that Harman speakers with Harman AVR should work well. Boy does it ever.
First of all, I was skeptical that the tiny center channel speaker (dual 3.5 inch drivers) would be adequate. My other system uses the terrific Sony SS-CN5000 Dual 5.25 inch Center Channel Speaker Sony SS-CN5000 Dual 5.25″ Center Channel Speaker and it really has great sound. But I have to say, the dialog out of the center channel with the HKTS 15 system sounds even better. We used just TV speakers before, where the dialog was often so muddy that we had to have the volume way up just to figure out what people were saying. Now the dialog is crystal clear and doesn’t have to be so loud. Our AVR (and I am sure all of them do this) allows us to set volume levels on individual speakers so we set the center channel exactly where we wanted it for best dialog reproduction. Do not think this speaker is too small to give you the sound you are looking for.
Secondly, the subwoofer is plenty powerful enough to shake things up. I watched the Balrog scene from LOTR I and the bass was wild. It is a downfiring subwoofer which means three sides are smooth (the back is full of connections, power cord, switches, etc.) so it kind of looks like a little table. It has a cool white light “dot” on the top to let you know it is powered up. It can be set to only come on when it gets a signal, so the light will let you know it is working (I leave mine on all the time, it doesn’t really use much power).
Third, the installation was pretty easy. People on here have complained about the brackets but I found that they worked really well. One thing, they are designed to work where the wires come right out of the wall behind the wall bracket. I didn’t have that situation, mine came down from the ceiling molding. So I CAREFULLY drilled two holes in the top of each plastic bracket so I could still get the wires inside as shown in the instructions (versus coming in from the open back). I then threaded them up through the collar and was able to use the whole bracket as instructed and have the connections hidden by the mounting system. It looks terrific.
Fourth, the speaker wire supplied is not in-wall grade wire so I would not use that speaker wire if you are going in wall or under carpet. But the included subwoofer wire is perfectly fine and color coded (purple) for idiot proof connecting. Subwoofer cables cost + so having the included one is terrific. In wall speaker wire you can buy at home depot or Frys. Don’t buy at BB or other electronics stores, as they will overcharge you.
Fifth, as others have mentioned here, the speakers are gorgeous. Even my wife likes the look of them (and is glad I hid the wires behind the moulding). I couldn’t be happier and am really glad that I chose these speakers.

I bought this speakers set from ebay. Wow!!! They are so nice. I am impressed with their stylish design and sound quality. They look very beautiful with it’s vibrant black color and stylish metallic frames with Harman Kardon name printed on it. The build quality is also solid. It also comes with bunch of accessories. The reason I gave it four stars is because of the below minor points:
- Size of the sub-woofer… it’s huge for my room
- Included wall mount brackets are difficult to put together (Included brackets was one reason I bought this set)
- The spring connector located at bottom of the speaker are inconvenient to useOverall I liked it very much.

First – Shipping was excellent. Customer Service – It was excellent (called during US work hours). Sub is huge but glossy and beautiful, so no need to hide. Speakers itself are smaller than I expected. I have done considerable research before buying and was not disappointed. Initally, I did not use ezsetup through my HK receiver, but after setup of speakers properly and adjusting bass etc, they sound great. Wires are enough and lengthy. Had to just go to lowes and spend abou for screws which did no come with wall brackets. Overall very satisfied with purchase.Good speakers but wall brackets are not included. – T. “All the hardware for bracketing the speakers on the wall is included.”This is not the case except for the center channel speaker. I had to buy the wall brackets separately for another or so.
The speakers sound very good and I’m happy with them but if you intend to wall mount them keep in mind the brackets will cost you extra, and you must by them directly from Harman Kardon.

I purchased the 401S back in September, when the price dipped below 3 bills. At that price (and even at the current level) this receiver is excellent value for money.
What I was looking for was a small, HDMI-capable receiver to power a family room setup. There are certainly better choices for a full blown home theater, but for my needs this unit fit the bill perfectly. Currently, I have HD satellite and DVD player connected through the 2 HDMI inputs and a second DVD player/media server connected by component video and coax digital audio. Everything is channeled through a single HDMI cable to the HDTV, with sound being handled by a JBL SCS200 home theater system (another bargain from Amazon).
Everything works perfectly, setup was easy and performance is very good. HD images are delivered perfectly and sound quality is excellent for movies and also very good for music. I can’t really say that I notice the 1080i “upconversion” of analog video (I tested S-Video and Component), but the simple fact that I can channel these through the HDMI output is a great feature.
I was concerned about the overheating problem reported by other reviewers and I agree that the unit does get pretty hot, but no more so than some other components, including my satellite receiver. As a tip, all heat build-up is on the left side of the unit (viewed from the front). There are vents on that side, but none on the top of the unit, so I don’t quite understand the warnings about stacking devices on top. I actually have components stacked on top of the 401S and everything behind glass doors, but I have left plenty of space to the left of the unit and the rear of the cabinet has good ventilation. So far I have not had any problems, despite the unit often running all day. The unit has an overheat shut-off protection feature, but it has never been triggered.Pros:

Quality control issues at JVC? – Tennis5 – Atlanta, GA
I purchased one of these refurbished from a factory authorized JVC dealer. Supposedly, the unit had been checked out by JVC quality control technicians, problems remedied, and then put back on the market for sale at a lower than retail price. The first unit I recieved…half of the jacks didnt work…HDMI, digital jacks…only RCA jacks worked. So I sent it back for a new unit. I will say the sound was good from the RCA jacks and the unit has lots of power….that is the only reason I would give it 1 star…otherwise I would give it none. The second unit I received would not move off of the Auxilary setting…in other words, you couldnt use the Tuner, CD, DVD, etc settings…so I sent it back one more time. 3rd unit was shipped and I waited for the UPS guy like a kid at Christmas waiting for the perfect gift (what was I thinking?). The 3rd unit wouldnt even power up. 3 units and none of them operated properly…I cant say for sure who JVC has working quality control at their factory, but I am beginning to believe it might be they guys from the movie “Dude, where’s my car?”. From what I have read elsewhere, it isnt just the refurbed 401 units that have issues…the new ones have had bad reviews as well. I dont often give a bad review, but this unit was a total headache for me. After sending the last receiver back, I purchased a refurbed Onkyo unit (575)…have been using it for 6 months with not one problem and it sounds great! One HDMI input gave me video but no sound. The other gave me nothing.
That was on the TV. It was able to pick up sound on the receiver. The reason I bought it was for the Dual HDMI ports as a switcher and for the HDMI for my Toshiba HD D1. The optical input over the DBS component input kept shutting of the receiver every 10 minutes. The other optical and coaxial worked fine. This is the most quirky reciever I have ever used. I have had 2 Sony receivers and a Pioneer and they all worked flawlessly. I am using the 5.1 inputs for my D1. If I had known this I could of bought another Pioneer.Some problems – dissenter – Wellfleet, MA
Purchased this because it had two hdmi inputs. I was hoping to hook up my DVR and a high end DVD player. Found that using both hdmi inputs was problematic, ended up inputting the DVD player as Component video with optical sound. This reciever is incredible. I am running Bowers and Wilkins (B&W) 600 series speakers with it, and it sounds amazing. You hear incredible clarity. I had an older model that the HDMI port stopped working on, and I sent it back to HK and they shipped me this model which is quite a bit nicer than the old model I had.
The video quality on this is quite nice– I run all my video sources into the receiver with HDMI (xbox 360, PC, blu-ray, dish/tivo) and run one HDMI cable to the TV. But… you should buy this reciever for the SOUND. It does have 7.1 but nothing really uses this format, so the extra 0 or so on those 2 extra speakers isn’t worth it IMHO. It also has a second zone, which I’m using for speakers that are wired to my patio.
I ordered a second unit (the 2600 model) for an additional living room. If you have small (bookshelf) speakers consider the 2600 model– the 3600 model is great for tower speakers. It puts out plenty of power, the HK receivers are high-current, so 85 watts in an HK is way more than 100 watts in a Sony. The sound clarity is excellent, and I recommend pairing it with high-quality speakers (B&W 600 or CM series are an excellent choice).
Defective on Arrival! Harman service is awful and won’t uphold warranty – OnlineShopper1907 – Pennsylvania
The AVR 3600 unit arrived completely defective and non-working. It was purchased directly from Harman Kardon. Harman is very good at avoiding warranty claims and does not want to replace the unit. First they said that they didn’t have my order info. After talking with a supervisor, my order info was found but the Harman rep claimed that the damage occurred during shipping and that they aren’t responsible, even though they didn’t offer any option of getting shipping insurance when I purchased the item. I never want to buy a Harman Kardon receiver again, with the customer service experience that the company has. Having replaced my venerable HK AVR 80-II with the 3600, I am very disappointed. The Bridge (iPod dock) is inoperative telling me that it is “not connected”. The lighted volume control is a ridiculous feature. The interruption from satellite sound is annoying. Worst of all is that FM reception is a far cry from that of the old unit.
Today the 3600 is going back.
JCDecent, but not great – Random guy – North Texas
I am a bit cold, after having the AVR3600 in my living room for 2 days now, there are a few frustrations that still have me disappointed, and I start with them.- The volume nob does look kinda cheap, but when you power it up, it does looks somewhat cool as the inner ring glows white.
- If you have a video mode other than standard (ie. movie) the audio start-up delay is a horrendous 2 seconds. Which sounds like nothing, except for when you are pausing live TV or backing up 7 seconds. When the video mode is standard it takes about 300-500mSec for the audio to resume after the video does, which is tolerable, but that means you can’t really use some of the features of the product. This might not hit all cable boxes, mine is u-verse
- As well, with the video mode, if you pick another mode I have noticed an very discernible increase in artifacts. The biggest place I’ve noticed it is on noggin JR. Which the u-verse box up scales from ntsc to 1080i, so we are not talking about perfect video, but the AVR3600 can add a lot of artifacts. Flipped back and forth between passthru mode on the same animated video to see the differences.
- From playing with the PS3 and netflix streaming, I suspect my LN46B650 upscales from 720 to 1080 better, but only very slightly, I would not let that sway you from the purchase.With that said, the menus seems to be very decent. When you change the volume the pop up is very discrete in the lower right portion of the screen. Sounds so far is great, granted I only have 3.1 (no rears), but very clear. I have yet to have time to play with the iPod, and if anything overly great or bad pops up I will update this review.
With all of that said, there is one thing that I really like, to see what is going on, you hit the info button on the bottom of the remote. Up comes a box with the video coming in, audio coming in, and you can set the video going out (resolution and such) and same with the audio. So if you want to change modes for the current source you can do it with very few menus and button presses. I can not imagine how they could have done that part of the UI better.
I paid 4 from Warehouse Deals for mine, at that price I am thinking it is an okay value, thus the 3 stars, dual zone will get used when I redo a bathroom, back panel is very well done, aesthetics are great, don’t know if I will us the full 85W or the iPod interface, have a Apple TV sitting on HDMI port 3.
As far as HK, I sent them a customer service request from their website the very first evening, they have yet to get back to me after 1.5 business days. I am not impressed!
